Romans 12:12 “be patient in suffering”

At church this past Sunday, our pastor read scripture from Romans 12:9-12 and this scripture stood out to me and I think it’s especially important today.

Today, there is a dark cloud cast over those of us who love and are hopeful. We feel despair and devastation. Those of us who have experienced harm are especially hurt to see our fellow citizens betray us and our hurt. To elect a president who has caused so much harm to others.

Today I woke up feeling hopeless. I woke up thinking, what is this all for? And then I reflected and realized, this doesn’t change who we are. We are hopeful and strong and continue to fight for what is right.

Our pastor, in his sermon on Sunday, shared that we should have compassion and treat each other kindly. He said no matter which side you’re on, to love and have compassion for each other. I agreed with it then, then woke up this morning wondering how I ever could have agreed with that sentiment, and now I’m back at agreeing with it.

Our country, our citizens, have showed us where they’re at. And there is a lot of misunderstanding and lack of empathy and care for others. But it doesn’t always have to be that way. We see where the country is at and now we act accordingly. We love others. We have compassion for others. Our job is to love those who cannot love themselves and maybe, just maybe, it’ll spark change and betterment. And even if it doesn’t, this is about us and our character. Regardless of what others did and how they voted, I am still a good person and I still have my values and morals. And I will continue to live every day, now and for the next 4 years, accordingly.

Many of us are suffering now. To say to be patient during this suffering is much easier said than done. But we are not alone. We are still good, and good will prevail. We adjust now and continue to act in love.

And maybe we do it through a heavy heart.
